The city of Helsinki has set an ambitious aim to be the most functional city in the world. One core dimension of this vision is improving walkability in the city center. Helsinki decided to start a dialogue about this vision by asking how people perceived the current state of walkability in the city center and where it could be developed, through a Maptionnaire survey.
The Apollo School in Helsinki’s Malminkartano neighborhood used Maptionnaire to have high school students try out online participatory mapping as part of their geo-media class. In this advanced geography course, pupils train their geographical thinking, learn how to analyze their surroundings using a variety of methods, and how to interpret the data they gather.
Helsinki’s City Planning Department used Maptionnaire to enable the city’s residents to contribute their ideas to the master planning process and influence what Helsinki will look like in the future. With Maptionnaire, our map-based questionnaire tool, the planners were able to engage 4,700 residents who marked more than 33,000 places of interest and their own ideas directly on the map.
We helped the City of Helsinki explore the idea of establishing a national urban park. We facilitated a workshop where planners and park advocates co-designed a survey for crowdsourcing the question, managed the survey’s technical implementation, and processed the results to be directly available for guiding the next steps of the planning process.
Finland’s winter sports capital, Lahti, has made child-friendliness a strategic goal in the development of the city. A necessary precondition for achieving this has been to find ways for including the thoughts and experiences of children into the city’s work processes. At Lahti’s urban planning office, using Maptionnaire has proved to be the best practice.
“Nikkilä Memories” is a project that used Maptionnaire to collect and share people's memories in Sipoo, Finland. While memories are an important part of the history and identity of a place, they also serve as a fruitful source for urban planning and development. In Sipoo’s case, Maptionnaire was used as a participation tool to enhance cultural heritage influence.
