Maptionnaire was one of the partners at the Pavilion of Finland at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia last year. Finland’s exhibition entry “New Standards” presents the history of prefabricated wooden houses of Puutalo Oy (Timber Houses Ltd.). With Maptionnaire’s map-based service, the project presents interactively where Puutalo’s houses have been exported, what they look like, and what the story behind them is. The archive is partly built by crowdsourcing contributions: people can leave their entry via the Maptionnaire survey and thus be a part of the project.

“The Covid situation changed the implementation of the exhibition, and also our part in it. Initially, we were planning to present an interactive map of the responses in a live situation in Venice. However, we are fortunate that our solution doesn’t require face-to-face interaction to work: people can use Maptionnaire where ever they are, and explore and contribute to “New Standards” even from the comfort of their own couch,” says Maarit Kahila, CEO of Mapita Oy, the company behind Maptionnaire.

The 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia took place in Venice in May – November, 2021. The theme of the exhibition was “How will we live together?”. Finland was among 62 National Participations with “New Standards”.

“New Standards” Showing at the Museum of Finnish Architecture in 2022

The exhibition will continue showing at the Museum of Finnish Architecture in 2022. In Venice, it was not possible to use the interactive, touch-screen map due to restrictions, but this will be made possible at the exhibition in Finland.

During the Venice event, the Maptionnaire survey created for the New Standards project got over 2600 responses. We hope it will continue to attract people to participate now that the exhibition moves to the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

The New Standards exhibition is open to the public from January 21 – April 10, 2022 in the small exhibition hall at the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki, Finland. More information on the museum’s website.
