The City of Jyväskylä wants to encourage community involvement and participation in master planning with new community participation methods. The planners’ goal is to enhance dialogues with residents around master planning, land-use planning, and architectural competitions.

Using Visual Surveys to Encourage Community Involvement

A key aspect of their work is to use highly visual maps and pictures to motivate people to get involved in planning and respond to the city's surveys.

And the engagement work is not only about having people provide the officials with information. With Maptionnaire Citizen Engagement Platform, the planners have a unique opportunity to provide information for the public as well.

Increasing Public Participation in Master Planning

Jyväskylä uses Maptionnaire for its master planning process. For example, the local community was involved in transforming the surroundings of an in-city highway corridor. And this project is a brilliant example of how the software's visual features can be applied to make public engagement a two-way process.

In this project, the planners made a map survey that highlighted the corridor and showed two different scenarios for its future development. They also made it possible for residents to dive deeper into the scenarios through more detailed visualizations of the main nodes of proposed interventions. Respondents could switch between the scenarios, study specific aspects of them, and give their opinions on desired outcomes.

The highway scenario survey attracted over 500 residents to make over 2,500 map markings and the results are applied to guide the drafting of land-use plans in the area.

With this and many other Maptionnaire surveys, Jyväskylä’s planners have made it possible to acquire valuable local knowledge that would otherwise be hard to find.

Maptionnaire has had an impact on our work and it’s often very interesting to see the results. One of the most important things is that the feedback from the respondents has been positive. They have liked the questionnaires and have found them very user-friendly.
